Techniques for Blowing Out Transitioning or Natural Hair

By Olivia X. Pierce

As with using a flat iron, blowing out natural or transitioning hair is something you may choose to take on every once in a while to get a specific look or to switch up your style.

For the most part, its best to stop using hot tools on your hair as much as possible. However, if you apply the right technique and products, you should be able to do occasional blow outs without causing too much damage.

At times it is nice to blow dry your hair before you do a braid or twist out style. Using this technique you get a sleeker and sometimes longer lasting style. Blow drying before putting in the twists or braids also helps your hair to dry quicker.

If you do a blow out prior to doing a braid or twist out you have to change the products that you use to make sure that you don't dampen your hair excessively and cause it to "go back" after the blow dry.

Choosing the Most Effective Blow Dryer: For natural or transitioning hair, it is important that you use a blow dryer that comes with a comb attachment. This makes it much easier to get through thick hair. It also helps with technique in that you don't need to use a comb or brush in one hand while holding the blow dryer in the other hand. So in buying a blow dryer, you must first eliminate all kinds that do not accommodate an attachment.

After you remove any blow dryers that don't actually come with an attachment comb there aren't that many selections left. Basic brands include Yellow Bird, Con Air, Tourmaline Tools and Hot Tools. You want a ceramic ionic one.

Products: During the blow drying process, you should only use heat protectant. This is because if you use conditioner or moisturizer, it will take your hair longer to try. Conditioners and moisturizers add moisture to your hair, this will only be additional moisture that you are trying to get back out as you are blow drying. After your hair is dry, however, apply an oil based moisturizer, gloss or shine serum and hair oil.

The Method: For the fastest drying and to curtail breaking, it is a good idea to section your hair out into at least 12 sections then dry from tip to root combing through each section of hair until it is dry.

If you go from root to tip you will no doubt pull your hair out because it causes too much tension on the hair. Also, wait to put on any products, especially oils, until you are done drying each section. If you put the oil on before the section is dry, it takes much longer to dry because the strands are already coated with the moisture "sealed in".

Black hair care and black hair styles do not have to be difficult as long as you know how to style your hair. Go to hair care forums, other hair care forums and study as many transitioning hair care tips as you can find. Search for terms such as grow long hair, no big chop, transitioning products for hair, transitioning hair care tips, or going natural to find the best advice.
