By Stacey Hastersenn

If your skin care routine just isn't working for you, perhaps you should adopt a new one that is more appropriate for your skin type. That happens more than you realize. The first thing you need to do is to find methods and products that are meant for your skin type. It doesn't matter if you have oily, dry or combination skin or if your skin is sensitive or sun damaged; there are products and caring methods that will work with every skin type. However, there are some common mistakes that are made even if you are getting everything else right.

The most effective skin care approaches for your skin type are well known and do work very well. You will be able to tell rather quickly when you've chosen the wrong product for your skin type. Make sure your product matches your skin type in order to keep your skin well hydrated. Watch that you are drinking enough fluids to properly hydrate your skin.

And what will that do to you? Your sebaceous (oil) glands will simply make extra oil in an attempt to repair what you've scrubbed off and it will leave you with super oily skin all over again. Take some gentle and natural cleansing pads with you when you leave the house.

Water temperature matters, so be careful when showering or washing your face. Avoid taking steaming hot showers if you are going to put your face into the stream since dermatologists recommend against this due to harm that you can bring to your skin. Removing all of the oil from your skin will only dry it out which is the effect hot water will have. Cold water is not advised for washing your face either because it can be a shock and actually cause broken capillaries.

It doesn't matter whether you have oily or dry skin, you need exfoliate at least once a week. As you may know, it is important to help your skin remove all the dead skin cells that accumulate. There are all sorts of ways to do this including both over the counter products as well as homemade exfoliating creams. Naturally made concoctions often work just as well and even sometimes better than anything you could buy at the store. Some people like to use things called microderm abrasion kits and the feedback on these has been quite positive. If you regularly exfoliate your skin properly it won't take long for it to look smoother, healthier and radiant.

To avoid transferring dirt and oil from your hands to your face wash them first. If you are in a routine of applying a night cream before bed your morning ritual of cleansing your face with warm water will remove this as well as the extra oil on you face too. Using cleansers is a great idea just be careful not to over cleanse as we've said already. You won't need to apply moisturizer if your skin tends to be oily but if it is normally dry try using a moisturizer after cleansing.

Dermatologists all over the world agree that the most important thing you can do to care for your skin is to choose a good sunscreen. You already know how bad it is to get too much sun. Even people who are not habitual sunbathers can suffer from sun damage--it builds up over the course of a lifetime. Also, avoid thinking that going to a tanning salon gets you off the hook because it does not.

For dry skin type, another great method to add a freshening routine to your skin care program is to use a toner or cosmetic milk. These are products that won't upset the balance of moisture in your skin if you use them properly. These products are known for their ability to remove impurities on the skin including makeup. After using these products many women tout the feeling of clean freshness in the soft facial skin they have.

It doesn't matter what kind of skin you have, you can do all sorts of things to make your skin look, feel and behave better. The best thing to do is to learn what you can from good and reputable sources and then find the things that work for you and do them regularly.

Now that you've found the products right for your skin type it's important to stay with the one that works. You will quickly discover that finding the right product initially is a slow moving process, it's simply important that you not give up until you succeed in finding the right product for your skin.
