There is an increasing order for paraben free skin care products in the market. Parabens are groups of chemicals that are used as cosmetic preservative and by the pharmaceutical industry. Aside from the effectiveness of the compounds as preservatives, the chemicals are widely used for their fungicidal and bacterial properties.

These compounds are used as components for shampoos and body moisturizers. These are also used in shaving creams and personal lubrications. The compounds are also common components of parenteral medicines, tanning solutions, toothpaste, deodorants, and makeup. As a preservative, these are also utilized not only in beauty creams but also in food products.

It is deemed an effective and cheap way in preservation instead of the seemingly ineffective extracts from fruits and vegetables such as grapefruit. However, some conflicts arise recently on the issue of safety in the use of these preservatives. This started since the discovery by scientists that it is a component of the breast cancer cells. There are also studies that show it functions like estrogen, another perceived cancer proponent.

Most of these preservatives are occurring naturally in plants. The numerous studies that have been made on the different effects of these chemicals in rodents showed that it is not toxic. It has also been found to be absorbed, metabolized, and excreted fully at a very rapid pace.

No negative health effects have been documented on users with normal, healthy skin. However, persons who have allergies towards the preservatives have experienced irritation and even contact dermatitis on application. There are also negative effects of the compound on people suffering from rosacea.

Another side effect that these items may have is their capability to hasten the process of skin aging and DNA damage on exposure to sunlight. However, no study has been made that provides supporting evidence of this claim. Lacking the scientific findings, there is no change made on the standard limits set for parabens if used in food or cosmetics.

Because of the controversy on the regulation, scientific debates ensued. There are also additional researches that discuss the possible effects of the chemicals in inducing cancer and increasing the production of estrogen in the body. The researchers are also focused on the effects after a long term and frequent usage of the cosmetics and medicines that contain paraben.

However, despite the result of the studies, the industry that manufactures cosmetics still believes that it is safe to use. The manufacturers use as basis the record of long and safe use. They also use the results of recent studies that support their claims and the unavailability of the final decision that would put an end on the debate on the safety of this chemical.

To protect them, a clamor from the customers that additional studies are made to provide results that could help resolve the issues. Some customers are also beginning to look for cosmetic and medicinal items that do not include parabens. This is not hard to accomplish since there are companies that are starting to produce paraben free skin care products for their customers.
