For most people, trying to lose body fat is a daily priority, regardless of whether they are overweight or not. It has become an obsession in modern society. Sometimes this can become an unhealthy obsession as the methods used can be detrimental to health and progress. However, when it is done correctly, losing body fat is a positive thing and offers many health benefits - especially for people who are overweight or obese.
Why? Because the health risks involved are plentiful and harsh. This article will highlight the risks of being out of shape. Being overweight and obese significantly increases your chance of developing illnesses such as:
Heart disease - Coronary heart disease (CHD) is the leading cause of death in the United States for men and women.
Coronary heart disease is caused by the buildup of plaque in the arteries to your heart. This may also be called hardening of the arteries.
• Fatty material and other substances form a plaque build-up on the walls of your coronary arteries. The coronary arteries bring blood and oxygen to your heart.
• This buildup causes the arteries to get narrow.
• As a result, blood flow to the heart can slow down or stop.
Cardiovascular disease - is a class of diseases that involve the heart or blood vessels (arteries and veins). Cardiovascular disease refers to any disease that affects the cardiovascular system, principally cardiac disease, vascular diseases of the brain and kidney, and peripheral arterial disease. The causes of cardiovascular disease are diverse but atherosclerosis and/or hypertension are the most common. Cardiovascular diseases remain the biggest cause of deaths worldwide, though over the last two decades, cardiovascular mortality rates
Strokes - A stroke is a condition where a blood clot or ruptured artery or blood vessel interrupts blood flow to an area of the brain. A lack of oxygen and glucose (sugar) is flowing to the brain leads to the death of brain cells and brain damage, often resulting in impairment in speech, movement, and memory.
Diabetes - Insulin is a hormone produced by the pancreas to control blood sugar. Diabetes can be caused by too little insulin, resistance to insulin, or both. People with diabetes have high blood sugar because their body cannot move sugar into fat, liver, and muscle cells to be stored for energy. This is because either:
• Their pancreas does not make enough insulin
• Their cells do not respond to insulin normally
• Both of the above
High blood pressure (hypertension) - High blood pressure is called "the silent killer" because it often causes no symptoms for many years, even decades, until it finally damages certain critical organs.
Poorly controlled high blood pressure ultimately can cause damage to blood vessels in the eye, thickening of the heart muscle and heart attacks, hardening of the arteries (arteriosclerosis), kidney
These conditions are the leading killers in the western world and they can be prevented. We are developing these conditions at a much younger age - young adults tend not to think they are at risk of such illnesses, but they couldn't be any more wrong. These illnesses develop over time, so the sooner you act the sooner they can be avoided later in life - if they don't get you earlier. Being overweight or obese provides added stress to the body, which can make it difficult to function effectively. Your internal organs have to work harder to operate, but they do so under duress making your breathing and heart rate a real challenge - and you may not even realize. Being out of shape can have huge negative effects on your emotions and mental health. Not being able to wear your favorite clothes or wearing jumpers or hooded jackets in summer just to hide your appearance can seriously lower your self-esteem and confidence - being out of shape causes people to have a low opinion of themselves. The presence of low mood and depression is common with someone who has been overweight or obese for prolonged periods in their life. It doesn't have to be this way, granted that it is by no means an easy feat to make a lifestyle change but a premature death can be avoided by losing just 5 -10 lbs. for an individual who is overweight or obese - this would be a good starting point and goal to aim for when starting a fitness program. Considering a good fitness program is a choice between living a long health life or a short.
